Orchard Legacy in a Jar

Sweet, sun-ripened Orcas Island pears are slowly simmered with fresh garden bay leaves in copper pots to create this deeply aromatic spoon preserve. Velvety, rich, and naturally pectin-free, it beautifully balances the clean brightness of the heirloom fruit with a subtle, savory herbal finish.

Born in a farm kitchen on the tiny, ferry-serviced Orcas Island of Washington’s San Juan archipelago, Girl Meets Dirt began with an overabundance of heritage fallen orchard fruit and not enough hands to bake the family recipe pies. Eleven years and eleven Good Food Awards later, the commitment to tradition remains unchanged. Every single batch is cooked entirely by hand in the original six copper pots, preserving the finest locally grown organic heirloom fruit to absolute perfection before making its journey off the wee island on the ferry. This is a true taste of heritage, history, and Pacific Northwest island life in every single bite.

The pear that started it all was discovered growing wild on Orcas Island in the 1970s, where they had adapted to the island’s maritime rainshadow climate. Today, the Orcas pears are hand-picked at peak ripeness and cooked into a beautiful rosy spread with a lightly herbal note from bay leaves grown in Girl Meets Dirt's very own kitchen garden. It’s a versatile companion for panna cotta, cheesecake, and cheese boards and a delicious choice for pastry-wrapped baked brie.
