Chocolate is probably my favorite food, so The Great Book of Chocolate by pastry chef David Lebovitz is a cookbook I fully intend to spend a lot of time with. This completely revised edition is especially exciting for someone like me who loves to bake and is always searching for great chocolate recipes. But this book is much more than a collection of desserts—it’s a comprehensive guide to all things chocolate.
The book begins with the basics, covering what chocolate is, how it’s made, its history, the different varieties, and how to buy and store it properly. From there, Lebovitz takes readers to Paris with a section devoted to chocolate shopping, complete with useful French terms, tips, and a guide to four Paris chocolate shops.
Finally, there are the recipes: 50 amazing chocolate recipes that cover just about everything you could want to create with chocolate. From Chocolate-Cherry Buttermilk Scones to Chocolate Espresso Cookies, from Chocolate Mug Cake to Chocolate Tart, there’s something for every kind of chocolate craving. The book also includes classics like chocolate pudding, soufflé, mousse, and a milkshake. For savory chocolate lovers, there’s Chili Con Chocolate and Turkey Mole. There are even recipes for cocktails like a Chocolate Negroni and a Mocha Martini.
I tried the Chocolate-Chocolate Pound Cake and the Bouchons, and both were deeply rich, intensely chocolatey, and absolutely delicious. The recipes are easy to follow, with ingredients that are readily available at the grocery store. I loved the Bouchons so much that I’ve already made them three times.
With so many recipes I can’t wait to explore, this feels like an essential cookbook for chocolate lovers and would make the perfect gift for anyone who believes there’s no such thing as too much chocolate. Ten Speed Press provided me with a free copy of this book; the opinions are my own.
